Below is part of the Michigan Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs regulation statement regarding the use of collection containers as they relate to amalgam waste. This statement reads in part:

In addition to Amalgam Separators, DEQ state regulations require dentists to comply with standing ADA/MDA best practices including:

 Collect and recycle mercury and dental amalgam waste to either the contracted separator company or to a US facility that will reclaim or distill the mercury for reuse and use chair-side traps to retain the amalgam and recycle the content. Included in this category is amalgam capsules, amalgam scrap, teeth w/amalgam and any traps that may be in the grey(waste) water stream where amalgam may me introduced.

>Provide proof that they comply with the amalgam recycling regulation on an annual basis.

 Sub Section (d) of the governing regulation states that dentists must: “store all dental amalgam waste in an enclosed and structurally sound collection container until a sufficient amount has been collected for shipment to a reclamation facility or recycler or at a minimum, recycled annually.”

> Proof of compliance is required with license renewal application
